Pilgrimage is a journey by a devout and faithful of a religion to a place sacred according to that religion or other religions. People of all religions across the world make pilgrimages in their life time to, mostly places considered sacred and holy by the religions they practice. Sometime, more catholic persons do make pilgrimages to even sacred places of other religions. So, for Muslims, pilgrimage to Mecca is most important in a lifetime, devout Christians make pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Buddhists to Gaya and so on. Hindu religion is no exception. the uniqueness of Hindu pilgrimage is that there is a large number of pilgrim centres or holy places that a Hindu can visit in his/her life time and these places need not be connected to any particular, saint or god, though it is common that a particular pilgrim site has its own deity and legends. In Hinduism, a pilgrimage is called tirtha Yatra (Yatra - journey and tirtha- a holy place).
